Getting to know Pamela "Carrie" Upshur of NuLu Coding Academy

As the Founder of NuLu Coding Academy, Pamela "Carrie" Upshur's mission is to empower young girls to become leaders in tech by teaching them to code and build confidence, aiming to spark an interest in tech through hands-on workshops, mentorship, and creating pathways to college and careers, ensuring diverse voices shape future innovation.

NuLu Coding Academy seeks to address the “underrepresentation of women of color in tech and business,” offering a variety of free and paid programming for young girls aged 8-12 including boot camps and summer camps.

Community is the driving force behind NuLu Coding Academy's programs. Their  approach is backed by research that shows girls taught within a group setting of peers who look like them report an increase in both their coding abilities and participation in STEAM activities. Girls with a strong sense of belonging are more likely to continue in STEAM long-term and pursue meaningful careers in the field.

“We’re going to be focused on entrepreneurship opportunities for these girls as well because tech touches everything. We absolutely cannot allow for demographics to be left behind.

"We exist to make sure today’s learners can become tomorrow’s leaders in tech—regardless of their background, zip code, or identity. We’re here to reimagine what’s possible and who gets to build it."
